Pressure and site check
We measure static water pressure at a hose bib, note the meter and service size to work out available gallons per minute, and walk the yard for low spots, soggy ground, downspout outlets and where water goes in a storm.

Zone and route design
Zones are drawn by hydrozone and capped by flow — you cannot run more heads on a valve than the service can feed at the right pressure. Drainage lines are routed to a real outlet, whether that is daylight at a slope, the street, or a dry well.

Proposal
Broken out by zone count, head and emitter count, controller tier, backflow assembly, and — separately — the drainage scope, so the watering work and the storm-water work can be judged on their own.

Utility locate
DigAlert (811) marks public utilities before any trenching. On an existing system we also locate the current mainline and wire path so we tie in cleanly instead of cutting them.

Trenching
Lateral lines run eight to twelve inches deep, mainline twelve to eighteen. Where an established lawn stays, we pull a vibratory plow instead of open-trenching so the turf knits back in weeks, not a season.

Valves, backflow and controller
Valves are set in boxes at the manifold, the backflow preventer is installed at the height code requires, and each valve is wired back to the controller. A flow sensor and master valve are added where leak shut-off matters.

Pipe, heads and drip
Laterals are laid and heads set at finished grade to their spec spacing for head-to-head coverage. Beds get drip line or point-source emitters at each plant, on a filter and pressure regulator so the hard water does not wreck them.

Drainage build
Channels are cut to fall — at least one percent for pipe, more for surface flow. Catch basins sit at the low points and under downspouts, solid pipe carries the water to a daylight outlet or a dry well sized to the roof and paved area draining into it. Where there is no fall, a sealed basin and a sump pump on a dedicated circuit do the lifting.

Test, program and backfill
The mainline is pressure-tested, lines are flushed, heads are adjusted, and the controller is programmed zone by zone with cycle-and-soak run times. We walk every zone with you, then backfill, compact and repair sod and mulch.
Permits and inspections: A backflow prevention assembly is required by the City of Bakersfield and the water purveyor, and once installed it must be tested every year by a certified backflow tester. A new or upsized water meter is a utility job on their schedule. Drainage may not be discharged onto a neighbouring property — every outlet on the plan goes somewhere legal.

Trenching conditions
Open dirt trenches fast. Established lawn that has to survive, tree roots, buried rubble or a long mainline run from the point of connection all add time and method cost.
Controller and control gear
A basic timer is inexpensive. A weather-based controller with flow sensing, a master valve and a rain shut-off costs more up front and is usually what pays for itself on a Bakersfield water bill.

Whether a compliant assembly already exists, and what type the site requires, changes both the parts and the plumbing to set it at the right height.
Drainage scope and outlet depth
Two downspout tie-ins to daylight is a small job. A full French-drain network, a flat lot with no gravity fall that needs a sump, or a deep outlet under a driveway is a large one.

What This City Does to Irrigation & Drainage
Bakersfield gets about six inches of rain a year, most of it in a handful of winter storms. The irrigation runs hard from spring to fall and the drainage does nothing until it is suddenly asked to move a lot of water at once — both have to be sized for that, not for a normal day.
Clay soil has a low infiltration rate: water runs off before it soaks in. Cycle-and-soak scheduling — several short run times with soak gaps instead of one long run — and drip in the beds are what actually cut the bill here.
The water is hard and alkaline. It scales nozzles and clogs drip emitters, so systems get filters, pressure-compensating emitters and a periodic flush, not just a timer and a hope.
Municipal pressure runs high in parts of town — high enough to blow heads and split fittings. A pressure regulator at the valve or the point of connection is cheap insurance.
Many Bakersfield lots are dead flat, so drainage often has nowhere to fall by gravity. That is when a sealed basin and a sump pump on its own circuit are the honest answer, and we say so rather than promising a French drain that cannot outlet.
Backflow testing is actively enforced here, and water-budget billing plus drought restrictions make a weather-based controller a genuine payback, not an upsell.

Before You Call, or Right After
Why is my water bill so high in summer?
Usually some mix of an old high-pressure spray system, run times set as one long soak that mostly runs off Bakersfield clay, no rain or weather shut-off, and hidden leaks at valves or fittings. A pressure check, a switch to drip in the beds, and cycle-and-soak programming are where the savings come from.
Can you convert my sprinklers to drip?
In planting beds, almost always — we cap the spray heads, run drip line or emitters to each plant, and add a filter and pressure regulator. Lawn areas stay on spray or rotary heads, or move to a low-water turf, since drip under turf is a different system.
Do I need a permit, and what about the backflow test?
The system install itself is generally not permitted, but a code-compliant backflow assembly is required and has to be tested every year by a certified tester. We install it to the correct standard and can point you to a tester, or handle the first test.
Why is water pooling in the yard after it rains?
Either the grade falls the wrong way, the soil will not accept water fast enough, or there is no drainage path to an outlet. The fix is some combination of regrading the low area, adding catch basins and pipe, and giving the water a legal place to go — daylight, the street, a dry well, or a sump if the lot is flat.
Can you fix just the broken zone, or does the whole system need replacing?
Most of the time it is a repair — a bad valve, a cracked lateral, a shared neutral in the wire, or worn nozzles. We diagnose before quoting. A full replacement is the call when the mainline is failing in several places or the system was never zoned for the landscape it now waters.
